Starting in 2027, California begins phasing out the sale of new gas furnaces and gas water heaters. Here's what that actually means, what it doesn't mean, and how to plan for it calmly — from a family that's been keeping Napa homes comfortable for 25 years.

First, take a breath: what the rule actually says

California's air quality regulators have adopted zero-emission standards for residential appliances. In plain terms: after the rules take effect — beginning in 2027 — manufacturers can no longer sell new gas furnaces and gas water heaters for installation in California homes. New equipment will need to be zero-emission, which in practice means electric — and for heating and cooling, that means heat pumps.
